weekend update
Hollyhock m a d n e s s (husband for scale).
East bed grooving along. The salvia and Dark Towers penstemon are kind of smothering the shorter stuff in front. I may have to cut them back. The Philadelphus should eventually fill out and get taller, right now it's kind of lost.
Daylilies and happy thyme.
Tomatoes getting tall! Also that marigold I stepped on has recovered, tho he's a little shorty.
Winecups and agastache blooming. Note the dog in her self-dug pit.
Bees are enjoying the hollyhocks.

weekend update
Got most everything planted yesterday. First deadheaded the perennials, put down grass seed and watered. Ripped out the last of the bolted arugula from the raised bed. Then I hauled the last two bags of mushroom compost over two the south-facing bed and dug those in. Behold my half-assed hardening-off technique: plop the tray with all the flowers and tomatoes and basil on the patio, in the shade under the sumac the day before, leave them out overnight and plant the next day.
First the Robesons went in the raised bed.

Then the Sungolds and the basil took a ride in the wheelbarrow over to the south-facing bed.

The basil teepees are more to keep the dog off them than for anything else:
Speaking of dogs, here's our neighbor’s idiot chocolate lab, who likes to pop his head over the wall when I'm gardening next to it and Cujo at me. We're not entirely sure what his name is, so Bram and I refer to him as Cletus.
Planted the flowers in the front door pot last. Why is Elspeth Quinceberry giving me the stink eye?

closing things down
Hard freeze tonight. Pulled all the green tomatoes (chutney, maybe?), yanked the plants, broke up the strawbales, and spread them out as mulch.

weekend update
Put in the tomato and and basil seedlings today. Tomatoes in the strawbales. Left to right, facing the wall: Zapotec Pleated; Tess's Land Race (x2); Roma Rio Grande; Al Kuffa (x2). Yes, the Tess's and the Roma Rio Grande did finally sprout.
Basil went in the raised bed near the Sungold tomatoes, which are doing much better:
Caterpillar in the fennel. The intertubes tell me it is (or will be) a Black Swallowtail.
