visit to the new Santa Fe Botanical Garden location
The Santa Fe Botanical Garden has been working on their new garden up on Museum Hill, near my office. They had a free public open "house" this afternoon, so I walked over after work to check it out.

It was one of those perfect days.

straw bale beds
A few weeks back, I picked up a copy of Fine Gardening from the magazine swap rack at the Santa Fe Library. There was an article by Amy Stewart of Garden Rant about raised, straw-bale gardens. When I saw the article, the photo in it looked familiar. Then I remembered her recent post about having to wear "nice" clothes for video shoots about gardening:

Sure enough, there's a video with Amy talking about her straw bale garden. Some more digging (ha ha) turned up Amy's original post from back when she first started the straw bales. And a link from the video comments turned up this discussion thread started by a guy who calls himself "Strawbaleman." He shares lots of great photos of his gardens:

Maybe this could work in the side bed, along the south-facing wall.

seed starting
Gotta get off my duff and start some seeds! Since last year's setup turned out to be... er... not as easy as advertised, I probably ought to start my seeds in something like this:

transplanting/planting
Hardened-off 'maters went in today. One each of three types (Principe Borghese, Roma Rio Grande, Tigerella despite my faith, the Black Princes were duds) in three locations: back raised bed; side flower bed; backyard bed.
Last year, the tomatoes in the middle-of-the-backyard bed never took off. We thought, maybe not warm enough? It gets the lots of sun, but friends of ours have had better luck with less sun, but warmer locations (since the nights are often be cool, even in July and August), like up against walls and houses. So, this year, I'm experimenting with putting some tomatoes up against the wall in the side flower bed (south-facing), and up against the house (east-facing), in the raised bed where the herbs are.

Raised bed:

Side bed:

Backyard bed:

Also direct-sowed the cukes, black beans, pumpkin, and squashes. My fingers are crossed.
Had some leftover little leggy tomatoes, so Bram and I walked the dog over to Dave and Shelby's and gave 'em to them. I'm so jealous of her raised beds!
